Bad Loser – Grammys Party 2001
New York – February 23, 2001
MOUTHS dropped at the Grammys when Madonna stormed out of the Staples Center in disgust after losing out three times to Macy Gray, Steely Dan and U2.
Madonna, up for album of the year, record of the year and female pop vocal performance, became increasingly agitated, witnesses say, as she watched from her seat as her hopes for an award went down the drain.
“When they announced that Steely Dan won album of the year, she just had this look on her face – like she couldn’t believe it,” said our spy, adding, “When it was announced that U2 got the album of the year, she’d had it, and got up and left just as U2 was taking the stage for their acceptance speech. She walked out on the speech with Guy Ritchie trailing behind her, carrying her coat.”
Our mole noted, “She didn’t even bother going to the Warner Bros. party afterward, like she had planned,” referring to the soiree at L.A. City Studios that was attended by Bette Midler, B.B. King, Kid Rock and Paul Simon.
Madonna rep Liz Rosenberg denied Madonna walked out during the speech, but noted, “She was always planning on leaving after the third award she was nominated for, as she was having a romantic dinner with her husband. Madonna loves U2; she sent Bono Guinness beer to his dressing room, and he sent her flowers. She was in her seat when the award was presented, and then she left to go backstage, but not immediately, and she did not go to the Warner Bros. party because of the dinner.”
The other big news of the night was sultry songbird Toni Braxton’s taped-together dress – which made more than the TV audiences happy.
When Braxton was walking off the stage after accepting best female R&B vocal performance, she tripped and flashed the sound and light technicians working the show the Full Monty.
“There were some really happy techies backstage,” quipped one spy.
After the show, Tommy Mottola and his girlfriend, Thalia, held court at the Sony party at Ago with Macy Gray, Destiny’s Child, Elton John and Fiona Apple.

Grammy winner Shakira tried to scoot out on the sly by taking a cab with her hunky beau – a Lorenzo Lamas doppleganger. Later, the two rode up and down in the Mondrian’s elevator, cannodling away – oblivious to other guests.

At BMG’s bash at the May Company on Wilshire Boulevard, Joni Mitchell chain-smoked in a corner while Gwen Stefani did her best Marilyn Monroe impersonation. But the real scene-stopper was Darryl Hannah and her new dishevelled pink hair.
“She came with the Foo Fighters and just looked weird. She was so bewildered and out of it – and that hair!” said one spy.
