Bad Loser – Grammys Party 2001

Bad Loser – Grammys Party 2001

New York – February 23, 2001

MOUTHS dropped at the Grammys when Madonna stormed out of the Staples Center in disgust after losing out three times to Macy Gray, Steely Dan and U2.

Madonna, up for album of the year, record of the year and female pop vocal performance, became increasingly agitated, witnesses say, as she watched from her seat as her hopes for an award went down the drain.

“When they announced that Steely Dan won album of the year, she just had this look on her face – like she couldn’t believe it,” said our spy, adding, “When it was announced that U2 got the album of the year, she’d had it, and got up and left just as U2 was taking the stage for their acceptance speech. She walked out on the speech with Guy Ritchie trailing behind her, carrying her coat.”

Our mole noted, “She didn’t even bother going to the Warner Bros. party afterward, like she had planned,” referring to the soiree at L.A. City Studios that was attended by Bette Midler, B.B. King, Kid Rock and Paul Simon.

Madonna rep Liz Rosenberg denied Madonna walked out during the speech, but noted, “She was always planning on leaving after the third award she was nominated for, as she was having a romantic dinner with her husband. Madonna loves U2; she sent Bono Guinness beer to his dressing room, and he sent her flowers. She was in her seat when the award was presented, and then she left to go backstage, but not immediately, and she did not go to the Warner Bros. party because of the dinner.”

The other big news of the night was sultry songbird Toni Braxton’s taped-together dress – which made more than the TV audiences happy.

When Braxton was walking off the stage after accepting best female R&B vocal performance, she tripped and flashed the sound and light technicians working the show the Full Monty.

“There were some really happy techies backstage,” quipped one spy.

After the show, Tommy Mottola and his girlfriend, Thalia, held court at the Sony party at Ago with Macy Gray, Destiny’s Child, Elton John and Fiona Apple.

Grammy winner Shakira tried to scoot out on the sly by taking a cab with her hunky beau – a Lorenzo Lamas doppleganger. Later, the two rode up and down in the Mondrian’s elevator, cannodling away – oblivious to other guests.

At BMG’s bash at the May Company on Wilshire Boulevard, Joni Mitchell chain-smoked in a corner while Gwen Stefani did her best Marilyn Monroe impersonation. But the real scene-stopper was Darryl Hannah and her new dishevelled pink hair.

“She came with the Foo Fighters and just looked weird. She was so bewildered and out of it – and that hair!” said one spy.

Tulsa Oklahoma – December 6, 2000

It appears the third time’s the charm for record mogul Tommy Mottola, who discovered, signed and married songbird Mariah Carey, only to divorce two years ago.

Mottola, head of Sony Music Entertainment, married his third wife, Mexican soap opera actress Thalia Sodi, in an extravagant, all-star wedding Saturday at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, reports People magazine.

New York – September 5, 2000

SONY MUSIC chief Tommy Mottola was spotted recently in St. Patrick’s Cathedral – leading to talk that he and his fiancee, Mexican TV star Thalia, will soon wed there. One source claims that Mottola needs to convert back to Catholicism after adopting the Jewish faith for his first wife, Lisa.

Mottola tells friends that he never left the church, and that he was simply at

St. Pat’s to pay a call on Archbishop Egan, who he has known for awhile. The former husband of Mariah Carey has also assured pals that he and Thalia have not set a wedding date and that, contrary to Mexican media reports, she did not face a kidnap threat a few weeks ago.

Pasta Connection

Pasta Connection

New York – September 4, 2000

Da Silvano may not be the fanciest restaurant in New York, and it’s far from the hippest, but under the manic supervision of its owner, Silvano Marchetto, it’s quietly remained the trattoria of choice for the city’s media, fashion, and art-world elite for 25 years.

And then there is Da Silvano. Tonight, this cozy 108-seat Italian eatery is fully packed, the celebrity quotient as high as the marked-up Tuscan reds on the wine list. Michael Caine, in a black shirt and black slacks, is holding court at the front window table with his elegant wife, Shakira, and four friends. Across the aisle, Fran Lebowitz schmoozes with two women, within eavesdropping distance of John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion, who needed a larger table after running into Paul Schrader at the door. “I’ve been coming here for fifteen years,” muses screenwriter Schrader. “Who would have thought this place would still be hot?”

Wander into the next room, and over by the brick wall, Anna Wintour, wearing pearls, a simple peach top, and crisp white trousers, is having a quiet heart-to-heart with a girlfriend, while two tables away, Susan Sontag is laughing so hard that her throaty peals can be heard above the restaurant’s din.

Wait, there’s more. Out in front, the record producer Babyface and friends linger over coffee, discreetly glancing at model-of-the-moment Sophie Dahl, who is languidly sprawled on a bench on Sixth Avenue with her entourage, waiting for a table. Meanwhile, fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier, who looks like he slept in his rumpled clothes, anchors a corner, looking up between bites of dinner to people-watch.

Da Silvano is not a pretentious suit-and-tie or diamonds kind of place like Le Cirque; it’s not so trendy (think Pastis) that civilians have to make reservations weeks in advance or call an unlisted phone number to get in; sometimes there is an annoying hour’s wait between appetizer and entrée; and yet it’s got a mystique, a special niche, a reputation as a place where things happen. “It’s the downtown Elaine’s,” says New York Post ”Page Six” editor Richard Johnson, a regular who frequently runs items about the action on the premises — an August sighting of Keanu Reeves dining with Winona Ryder, or Jessica Sklar last fall gleefully showing off her diamond engagement ring to girlfriends shortly after Jerry Seinfeld proposed. “I get constantly bombarded by restaurant publicists,” says Johnson, “but I’ve never gotten a press release from Silvano. I either see things on my own or people see stuff and call me.”

There is always a lot to see here: daily dramas, fragments of people’s lives, some of them famous, many of them not. The businessman screaming into his cell phone on the losing end of a negotiation; the tipsy blonde careening into tables, much to her date’s amusement; Tommy Mottola and his girlfriend, Thalia, a Mexican soap-opera star with waist-length hair, ducking out after 45 minutes; a woman comforting another over breaking up with a bad-news boyfriend; Jeanne Tripplehorn in a pink sweater set and black skirt waiting on the bench out front.

Snub earns Lopez bronx cheer

Snub earns Lopez bronx cheer

New York – Septembre 11, 1999

THERE was more excitement backstage than onstage at this year’s MTV Awards, with Bronx-born Jennifer Lopez dissing the borough’s local TV news station and Howard Stern’s heckling goons being booted out onto the street.

Lopez incited the wrath of News 12 The Bronx by reneging on a promised interview with reporter Jorge Estevez. “I’ll be right back,” she told Estevez, and never returned. But News 12 got its revenge yesterday, continually reminding viewers of the diva’s shutout – she lost all four categories in which she was nominated.

Loudmouthed Stern sidekick Benjy had to be knocked down and dragged out on his back by security after he refused to quit taunting the Backstreet Boys. Minutes before, Stuttering John Melendez was ejected from the Met Opera House for the same bad behavior. And MTVers even threatened to pull the plug on Stern himself when he refused to stop harassing Ricky Martin, who was taping an interview with “Good Morning America.”

Meanwhile, despite their best efforts, Lopez and boyfriend Sean “Puffy” Combs were not the center of attention when they turned up at Sony‘s after-bash at Ruby Foo’s. The Bad Boy honcho and Lopez, wearing a massive rock on her ring finger, blew in with an entourage that included a bodyguard who usually blocks for Madonna. “Jen got him first, so Madonna had to find someone else,” laughs our insider.

Once inside, however, the constantly canoodling couple was pretty much ignored – except for swipes at Puffy’s penchant for wearing his shades in dark nightclubs. “Never trust anyone when you can’t see their eyes,” quipped a guest at Tommy Mottola’s table. The Sony chief held court with girlfriend Thalia, Joe Pesci, Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, and Jada Pinkett, who sat on hubby Will Smith’s lap.

The only dust-up came when Steve Stoute, the Interscope exec beaten up by Combs, was barred from the soiree for “security reasons.” “We didn’t want to host the rematch,” cracked one Sony source.

Later, Puffy was ever the gentleman at Bad Boy’s Shine party, where clueless bouncers tried to turn away Kid Rock. Breaking away from revelers Spike Lee, Jay Z and Derek Jeter, Combs went outside and escorted Kid to his VIP table.

Meanwhile, over at RCA’s Ohm bash, the never-punctual Artist We Still Call Prince turned up at 3:30, and begged the club to stay open for him until 5:30 a.m.
